Alcohol Blackouts: Why You Lose Memory When Drinking

What actually happens in your brain during a blackout

Your memory runs in stages. You take something in, hold it for a few seconds in short-term memory, then, if it matters, the hippocampus files it into long-term storage. Fragmentary blackouts, sometimes called brownouts, are the more common of the two by a wide margin. One study of alcohol-induced memory loss found fragmentary episodes were more than three times as frequent as en bloc ones. A brownout is easy to shrug off because pieces come back, but it sits on the same spectrum as a full blackout and points to the same thing: BAC went high enough to disrupt memory.

What BAC level causes a blackout

Blackouts become likely once BAC reaches about 0.16% or higher, per NIAAA. For context, the binge-drinking pattern that NIAAA defines brings BAC to 0.08%, which is roughly five or more drinks for men or four or more for women in about two hours. A blackout-level BAC is around double that again, so blackouts usually involve heavy, fast drinking rather than a couple of glasses of wine.

The number is not a hard switch, though. The threshold varies a lot from person to person, and the rate of rise matters more than the raw count. Reaching 0.16% quickly, in an hour of shots, is far more likely to cause a blackout than drifting up to a similar level slowly across an evening with food. A US standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol, and your body clears only about one standard drink's worth per hour, so a BAC of 0.16% can take more than ten hours to fall back to zero. Why you black out some nights and not others

Same person, same bar, different outcome. The variables that decide it are mostly about how fast alcohol reaches your blood.

  • Speed: shots and chugging spike BAC faster than sipping. Rapid rise is the factor most consistently tied to blackouts.
  • Empty stomach: food in the gut slows how quickly alcohol passes into the small intestine, where most of it is absorbed. Drinking on an empty stomach removes that brake and steepens the climb.
  • Body size and sex: alcohol spreads through body water, so a smaller person reaches a higher BAC from the same drinks. Women tend to hit a higher peak BAC faster than men of the same weight, partly because of differences in body water, per NIAAA.
  • Sleep, stress, and medications: being tired, run down, or on sedatives can deepen impairment. Mixing alcohol with other depressants is especially risky.

None of these change the basic rule. The higher and faster your BAC climbs, the more likely your hippocampus stops recording.

How common are blackouts

More common than most people assume, especially among younger and heavier drinkers.
